Synopsis

A riveting story of transformation and healing, PEACEABLE KINGDOM: THE JOURNEY HOME explores the awakening conscience of several people who grew up in traditional farming culture and who have now come to question the basic premises of their inherited way of life. Presented through a woven tapestry of memories, music, and breathtaking accounts of life-altering moments, the film provides insight into the farmers’ sometimes amazing connections with the animals under their care, while also making clear the complex web of social, psychological and economic forces that have led them to their present dilemma. Interwoven with the farmers' stories is the dramatic animal rescue work of a newly-trained humane police officer whose sense of justice puts her at odds with the law she is charged to uphold.

With strikingly honest interviews and rare footage demonstrating the emotional lives and intense family bonds of animals most often viewed as living commodities, this groundbreaking documentary shatters stereotypical notions of farmers, farm life, and perhaps most surprisingly, farm animals themselves.

Synopsis

How does a construction contractor from a tough Brooklyn neighborhood become an impassioned animal advocate?

In the award-winning documentary THE WITNESS, Eddie Lama explains how he feared and avoided animals for most of his life, until the love of a kitten opened his heart, inspiring him to rescue abandoned animals and bring his message of compassion to the streets of New York. With humor and sincerity, Eddie tells the story of his remarkable change in consciousness.

About Peaceable Journey

From the very first screenings of our documentary, Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home, audience members were keen to learn more about the issues explored in the film. They asked us to guide them to resources that would allow them to further explore their own unfolding journey toward a more just, compassionate and sustainable way of life. In response to this need, we have created the Peaceable Journey online guide.

The information and resources in this guide are offered in the spirit of inspiration, discovery and critical thinking. Our goal is not to put forth final answers, but to encourage thoughtful dialogue. We believe that each person is on a unique journey, and though we are happy to share what we are learning ourselves and how we are trying to live, we make no pretense of telling other people what to think or how to be in the world. These are questions of conscience that each of us must answer for ourselves. That said, we do present ideas and factual information that in many ways challenge commonly-held practices and ideas, with the hope that others might be inspired, as we have been, to re-examine their relationship to other animals and the natural world.
